You’re probably familiar with good-driver, good-student and good-credit discounts that most insurance companies offer on auto policies. But lately, brokers like me have been providing additional breaks you wouldn’t have seen just a year ago. These discounts can really add up but you won’t get them unless you know to ask for them and plan ahead.
Most people don’t simply run out one afternoon and buy a car with no planning or preparation. Too often, though, that’s how they approach getting car insurance. They treat it as an afterthought and call brokers for coverage from the dealer’s office, just before taking possession of their shiny new ride.
Plan at least a week ahead to lower auto insurance rates
Planning ahead is one of the easiest ways to save money. If you’re buying a car, lining up a policy a few weeks ahead of time can save up to 10 percent. And that’s even if you change your mind about what car you want. If you tell the broker you’re buying a Honda Accord and opt for a Toyota Corolla instead, the discount still applies.
And if you can swing the expense, paying for a year’s worth of auto insurance up front rather than setting up a monthly payment plan saves additional money.
Tell your broker, too, if you’ve added any safety features to your car, such as an after-market alarm system. Most policies take into account air bags and other safety features that come standard with the car, but you might be able to save money with extras added later. And if you’ve taken a defensive driving course, let us know because you may be eligible for another break. Taking such courses is so much easier these days because many are offered online. You don’t even need to leave your home to battle New York traffic or the subway stampede.
