5 Cool Apps to Help You Manage Your NYC Apartment Insurance

Preparation is the key to weathering any storm or, at the very least, providing peace of mind when the storm hits. When weather, theft, fire or accidents take away what you’ve worked so hard to buy, there are several cool apps to help you manage your NYC apartment insurance to regain what you lose during an insured loss event. These free apps help you keep track of what you own and what you paid for it, create and implement a disaster and mitigation plan, understand your insurance coverage and manage your policies, depending on your insurer. Consider:

MyHome Scr.APP.book. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners developed this app, a home inventory tool to help you document the fabulous contents inside your classic brownstone or wherever you call home. You can upload the purchase price, serial number, brand and category to help keep you organized if disaster strikes.

Developed by the Insurance Information Institute of New York, this home inventory software app for your mobile devices provides free, secure, online storage of your home inventory with anytime, anywhere access. Like other home inventory apps, you can include any pertinent information such as photos, serial numbers and purchase dates. You can also constantly update costs as prices fluctuate on your possessions such as jewelry.

Know Your Plan. Another great app from the Insurance Information Institute of New York, this tool helps you prepare for just about any kind of disaster — hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and tornadoes. You can plan ahead to protect your entire family, including your four-legged family members. The app has checklists to help you learn about mitigation and disaster prep, and you can create your own checklists, set due dates to accomplish specific tasks such as buying weather radios, and maintain a running tally on your progress.

Know Your Coverage. This app, which is also from the Insurance Information Institute, takes you through a series of quizzes to help you determine if you have the right coverage for a variety of disastrous scenarios. You’ll be guided though important questions that you can go over with a professional at Gotham Brokerage to help determine your risks, figure out your priorities and set up a plan to match your budget that provides the type and amount of coverage that you need.

Most insurers have mobile apps that allow their customers to manage their policies. Company apps vary widely, offering a variety of services from bill pay to making claims. Progressive offers an app that features Flo-isms based on the company’s popular commercial spokeswoman, Flo, in addition to an app that helps you take care of business. Travelers and Chubb also offer customer apps.

Apps can be a great resource but are certainly no replacement for the advice that your broker provides.
