As the age-old argument rages, Gotham provides great Manhattan and Brooklyn renter’s insurance
Let’s get this out of the way. Gotham Brokerage Co., Inc., is located in … Manhattan. We’re just a couple of blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge, though, if that helps mitigate things.
Truly, it doesn’t matter to us. We’re all New Yorkers. We do not discriminate when it comes to finding great insurance packages for our customers.
But some people get a little carried away with the whole borough-vs.-borough thing, especially when it’s Manhattan-vs.-Brooklyn. Maybe it’s the residue of Giants-vs.-Dodgers. Or maybe it’s just another excuse for New Yorkers to argue. Either way, as this Time Out New York piece shows, there’s plenty of pros and cons for both:
- Cost of living. It’s generally more expensive to live in Manhattan; your average rent in Brooklyn will be about 25 percent less than on the island. But if you want to live in a hip Brooklyn neighborhood like Williamsburg or DUMBO, prepare to pay Manhattan-like prices. But don’t forget …
- Commute times. U.S. Census data show that Brooklynites spend an average of 80 minutes per day commuting, compared to 56 for Manhattan dwellers. That’s 104 extra hours of commute time per year — because the jobs tend to be in Manhattan.
- The vibe. Hard to define, we know. But if you find the packed streets and ferocious, get-out-of-my-way pace of Manhattan invigorating, by all means hunt for apartments in the East Village, Upper West Side or Hell’s Kitchen. If you find Manhattan exhausting, you might be better off looking in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Red Hook and Prospect Heights. It’s all a matter of what you prefer.
Regardless of which borough you pick (and it’s interesting how many of the loudest Manhattan advocates are former Brooklynites, and vice versa) you need to secure your belongings with renter’s insurance. Gotham is the first place you should look.
The best renter’s insurance, in Manhattan or Brooklyn, is the kind tailored to your needs and your neighborhood. At Gotham, we can draw on multiple insurers to make sure you have the coverage you need. That’s true whether you are renting or taking the next step with the purchase of a condo or co-op.
If you move to a neighborhood in either borough that you’re unfamiliar with, Gotham can help guide you. We’re a New York City institution, family-owned and rooted in the city, providing insurance for New Yorkers for more than 50 years.
